Introduction: Youth Power in Shaping the Futures of Taiwan, 1 Hong Kong and the Wider Asia

Abstract

Youth represent the hope for national development and an innovative driving force in accelerating national development and progress. To a certain extent, they do embody the future of Asia. To envision Asia’s future, it is essential to carefully explore how young generation perceive Asia and how they construct their Asian identities. Despite the importance of youth influence, there has been a lack of enlightening publications that explores the influence of youth in prominent area studies or international relations-focus academic journals, barring some recent publications (Lee, 2018; Mohamad and Iqbal, 2019; Gupta and Sharma, 2020). For this reason, the International Journal of China Studies has specifically arranged this special issue, calling upon international scholarship to address how youth shape the future of Asia.

Author Biography

Alan Hao YANG, Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies, National Chengchi University (NCCU); Executive Director, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, NCCU

Dr. Alan Hao Yang is currently Executive Director of the Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation (TAEF), which is the pilot think tank facilitating Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy (NSP) to Asia. TAEF is selected in both 2018 and 2019 versions of Global Go To Think Tank Index Report and listed in one of the 2018 and 2019 Best New Think Tanks. Additionally, Dr. Yang is also leading TAEF in organizing the annual “Yushan Forum: Asian Dialogue for Innovation and Progress.” Dr. Yang has been serving as Policy Advisor to the Executive Yuan of Taiwan since 2018.

In addition, Dr. Yang also serves as Deputy Director of the Institute of International Relations (IIR) and Executive Director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at National Chengchi University, Taiwan. CSEAS serves as the international secretariat of the Consortium for Southeast Asian Studies in Asia (SEASIA), initiated by Kyoto University in partnership with 13 leading Asian studies institutions cross 10 countries.
