Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • For manuscripts not in English (e.g in Arabic or Malay), the title, abstract and keywords in English are provided. The list of references have been written in Roman alphabet.

Author Guidelines

All submission to JAT should follow the guidelines as below:

1. Journal of al-Tamaddun (JAT) covers multi-disciplinary study of Islam and Muslim, in particular issues related to Islamic history and civilization. All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Editor, and, if found suitable for further consideration, to peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees. All peer review is double blind. 

2. All articles, scripts or reviews submitted for consideration to the JAT should have two files: i. the main file which must not include author(s) affiliation but with title, abstract, keywords, full article and bibliographic references, and ii. a separate title page file indicating the article title, author(s)' full name (in the form preferred for publication), affiliation (including institutional and email address), and acknoledgement if necessary.

3. JAT prefers that articles submitted be sent electronically in MS Word format. All manuscripts sent to JAT will not be returned.

4. There is a charge for article processing, only after the article has been accepted for publication. The prosessing fee is MYR1000 (Malaysian Ringgit: One Thousand only) for Malaysian; and USD250 for international author(s). It is payable to the Universiti Malaya.

5. JAT accept articles generally range between 4,000 and 7,000 words depending on the subject matter.

6. Abstract in English and in the language of the article is required. Please also provide 5 chosen keywords. JAT prefers footnotes as a referencing system. It requires a complete citation--author, title, place of publication, publisher, and date of publication--upon first use of a source, and an abbreviated form of citation thereafter.

7. Footnotes references must follow the following format:

a) Book: Full name of the author(s) (Year), Title of the book (italic), Place of publication: Publishing house, page number. Examples: John L. Esposito (2010), The Future of Islam, New York: Oxford University Press, p. 5 or pp. 3-7.
b) Journal: Full name of the author(s) (Year), "Title of the article," Name of the Journal (italic), number or volume and issue, page number. Example: Fadi Alarabi (2009), "Islamicjerusalem: The First Qiblah," Journal of Islamicjerusalem Studies, Vol. 10, Winter, p. 16 or pp. 2-5. Frederick C. Conybear (1986), "Antiochus Strategos - Account of the Sack of Jerusalem in A.D. 614," The English Historical Review, Vol. 25, no. 99, p. 503 or pp. 513-516.
c) Chapter or article in a book: Full name of the author(s) (Year), "Title of the article or chapter," in surname of the author(s) or editor(s) of the book, Name(s) and Initial(s), Title of the book (italic), City: Publisher, page number. Examples: Abdul Aziz Duri (1990), "Jerusalem in the Early Islamic Period: 7th - 11th Century AD, in  K. J. in Asali (ed), Jerusalem in History, Essex: Scorpion Publishing, p. 105 or pp. 126-129.

8. The article must provide bibliography. Bibliographic references must follow the following format:

a) Book: Surname of the author(s), Name(s) and Initial(s) (Year), Title of the book (italic), Place of publication: Publishing house. Examples: Esposito, John L. (1996), The Future of Islam, New York: Oxford University Press.
b) Journal: Surnames of the author(s), Name(s) and Initial(s) (Year), "Title of the article," Name of the Journal (italic), number or volume and issue, pages comprising the article within the journal. Example: Alarabi, Fadi (2009), "Islamicjerusalem: The First Qiblah," Journal of Islamicjerusalem Studies, Vol. 10, Winter, 1-26. Conybear, Frederick C. (1986), "Antiochus Strategos - Account of the Sack of Jerusalem in A.D. 614," The English Historical Review, Vol. 25, no. 99, 502-516.
c) Chapter or article in a book: Surname of the author(s), Name(s) and Initial(s) (Year), "Title of the article or chapter," in Surname of the author(s) or editor(s) of the book, Name(s) and Initial(s), Title of the book (italic), City: Publisher, pages comprising the article or chapter within the book. Example: Duri, Abdul Aziz (1990), "Jerusalem in the Early Islamic Period: 7th - 11th Century AD, in Asali, K. J. (ed), Jerusalem in History, Essex: Scorpion Publishing, 105-129.

Submission means author has agreed to the Ethics and Malpractice Statement of this journal.  

Note: This is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles in this journal without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.
