Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the specifications in developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and Digital Literacy Skills teaching module for the topic Quadratic Equations. This study used a qualitative approach with a structured interview method and involved four participants from three districts in Malaysia. The results from the interviews were analysed using Atlas.ti 8 software by dividing the transcripts into several codes based on thematic analysis approach. The findings of this study showed that the Algebra domain, especially topic of Quadratic Equations in form four syllabus, was the most challenging concept for the students to master. The results of the interviews also found that teachers needed a module during the teaching process due to three factors; the lack of teaching resources, less effective existing teaching resources, and the desire to explore alternative teaching methods. In fact, the participants also suggested diversifying the content, activities, and software materials for the modules to be developed. These findings clearly indicate that teachers are still not satisfied with the existing teaching aids or Mathematics software used in the classroom and require a module which would meet their needs. All themes and codes that appear are summarized using schematic diagrams. The results of this study are important to ensure that the design and development of an instructional module for applying HOTS and Digital Literacy Skills for the topic of Quadratic Equations are implemented and drive a positive impact on increasing the digital literacy level among secondary school students.
