Abstract

Trainee teachers at the teacher education institute in Malaysia have been given necessary skills so that they are able to think, reason, solve problems, experiment and have metacognitive skills so that they would be able to convey science concepts effectively to primary school children during their practicum. This paper discusses a study conducted on nine primary school trainee teacher when they teach physics concepts during their practicum. Physics concepts in the primary school were taught in the subject Science, under the themes ‘Learning About the World Around Us’ for level 1 pupils and ‘Investigating Force and Energy’ and ‘Investigating Technology’ for level 2 pupils. As these teachers have been exposed to strategies and approaches to teach science, the study focus was to find out how well they strategize, prepare teaching aids, select set induction activities and communicate for the teaching of physics. Data were collected through class observations for topics magnets, electricity and measurement. The results show that trainee teachers were able to prepare interesting materials for the teaching and learning of physics in the primary school, but were not ready to teach the concepts effectively using the materials prepared. Even though trainee teachers have been given a number of strategies and approaches to use for teaching, the teachers were unable to select and strategize well to create a meaningful and effective learning experience for their pupils.
