Abstract

The study explores upper secondary chemistry students’ ability in using abstract cognitive strategies in Short Term Memory (STM). The aim is to investigate the variation of abstract cognitive strategies employed by six participants with different learning abilities. The study used a qualitative research approach and data were collected using in-depth interviews, observations and document review. Participants were asked to complete seven memory related tasks. Findings show that high achievers were able to use abstract cognitive strategies compared to average and low achievers. The findings of the present study will assist teachers in promoting appropriate abstract cognitive strategies and guiding their students to acquire quality scientific knowledge.
