Abstract

The study examined the psychometric properties of the Attitudes towards Mathematics (ATM) instrument using Rasch Model framework as well as identifying the relationship between attitudes towards Mathematics and Mathematics achievement among Form Four pupils in Kedah. A Quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. The Adapted ATM questionnaire consists of 26 Likert-type scale items with four dimensions (enjoyment, self-confidence, value and motivation) and was administered to 560 Form Four pupils from five secondary schools in Kedah. The reliability and validity of the ATM instrument was tested with the Rasch Model using the WINSTEPS version 3.66.0 program. The Pearson correlation analysis was conducted using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.The findings showed that the reliability indices of the respondents and items are high at .95 and .99 respectively. The results of Rasch Model analysis such as fit statistics, polarity item, Principal Component Analysis of Residuals (PCAR) and item-person map showed the construct validity evidence of the ATM instrument. The study also found that the respondents showed positive attitudes toward Mathematics. The Pearson correlation results showed that attitude towards Mathematics has a moderate positive and significant relationship with Mathematics achievement. The findings of this study have significant implications to the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the educators in Malaysia.
