This article analyzes the transformation of liberal Islamic thought within the context of postmodernism in Malaysia. It examines how liberal Islamic movements have shifted from classical liberalism, characterized by rationalism, individual autonomy, and universalist notions of rights, towards a postmodern orientation marked by epistemic plurality, the deconstruction of traditional religious authority, and plural conceptions of truth. The study traces the historical emergence of Islamic liberalism in Malaysia and examines the influence of postmodern philosophy on the epistemological, axiological, and methodological frameworks of social movements such as Sisters in Islam (SIS), G25, and the Islamic Renaissance Front (IRF). Using a qualitative approach and discourse analysis, the study finds that contemporary liberal Islamic movements increasingly critique established forms of religious authority, prioritize contextual interpretations of scripture, and reinterpret inherited normative structures. These developments indicate a deeper philosophical shift from classical Islamic epistemology towards frameworks that emphasize human agency and epistemic diversity, with significant implications for the role of religious institutions within Malay-Muslim society. The study concludes that liberal Islamic movements should be understood not merely as political or social actors, but as expressions of an underlying transformation in contemporary Islamic thought shaped by postmodern intellectual currents.
