Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the characteristics of some specific letters in the Qur’an, their vocal quality and impacts on the Qur’anic word meanings and their contributions to the inimitability of the Qur’an rhetroric style. To achieved this, the paper adopted an Inductive Analytical Method, focused on four aspects of the letters and their vocal aspects in the Qur’anic recitation art (Tajweed, namely: velarization (isti’lā’), non-velarization (istifāl), vocalization of voiced consonants (qalqalah), and voice spreading (tafash-shī). Also Sūrat al-’inshirā was chosen to analyse these aspects. The analysis show that each letter and its vocal characteristics contribute effectively in ensuring additional nuances and rethorical meanings on the Qur’anic words in which they appear. This is culminated with a remarkable harmony and consistency between the vocal, the meanings and the rethorical inimitability of the Quran.
