Drawing on his Chinese heritage and a distinctive, experimental practice, Chang consistently challenged the conventions of Thai modernism. As a result, scholars have frequently labeled him an "outsider artist"—a designation that has shaped interpretations of his work both in Thailand and internationally. Through a historiographical review of research on Chang up to 2024, this article examines how his outsider status has been framed in academic discourse and what this reveals about the boundaries of Thai art history. It argues that "outsiderhood" offers critical potential for rethinking Thai modernism and highlights gaps in current scholarship. Finally, it suggests that the framework of outsider art may provide new perspectives for understanding other Thai artists whose practices fall outside dominant art historical narratives.
Nawapooh Sae-tang, Wahyuni Masyidah binti Md Isa, Simon Soon Copyright (c) 2025 TIRAI PANGGUNG https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/61833 Fri, 21 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0800 Filem-Filem Komedi P. Ramlee: Kritikan Pelbagai Cara Sebagai Satu Konsep Filem-Filem Komedi P. Ramlee: Kritikan Pelbagai Cara Sebagai Satu Konsep Kearifan Tempatan https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66110
Siti Raihani Mohamed Saaid, Marlenny Deenerwan Copyright (c) 2025 TIRAI PANGGUNG https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66110 Sat, 22 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0800 The Flexible Reinvention of Kun Classical Dance in 21st-century China https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66111
This study examines the flexible reinvention of Chinese Kun classical dance in 21st-century China. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, nationalist cultural policies have promoted the institutionalization of Chinese classical dance as a disciplinary system. Within this framework of reinvented traditions, dance practitioners developed new forms such as Shenyun, Dunhuang and Han-Tang dance. Continuing this trajectory of reinvention, Ma Jiaqin—Chinese famous dancer and acknowledged founder of Kun Classical Dance—launched its reinvention in 2004. Employing qualitative methods, this study investigates the mechanisms of Kun classical dance’s reinvention and the historical conditions that shaped its emergence. The findings indicate that Kun classical dance was a reinvented tradition characterized by cultural flexibility, shaped by state-led cultural revivalism in post-1949 China, particularly the dual agendas of reviving tradition and promoting cultural innovation in the post-reform era. Its formation demonstrates a strategic negotiation between artistic practice and cultural institutions, reflecting both compliance with state cultural policies and engagement in discourses of national identity.
Yalinzi He, Sang Woo Ha, Kwan Yie Wong Copyright (c) 2025 TIRAI PANGGUNG https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66111 Sat, 22 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0800 Online Piano Tutors’ Motivation, Roles, and Challenges in China https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66114
Online piano tutorials are increasingly common in online music teaching in China. Due to limited research addressing the experiences of online piano tutors in China, this study examined the motivations, roles, and challenges of online piano tutors through semi-structured interviews with 11 Chinese online piano tutors. The results revealed that based on the self-determination theory, tutors showed both intrinsic motivations and extrinsic motivations that propelled them into the line of work. They acted as instructional guides and facilitators, supporting practice and communication. Key challenges included technical issues, limited physical intervention, difficulty keeping students focused, and low parental trust. The study offers insights in digital music instruction. These findings highlight the necessity of tutor development, improved platform support, and stronger home–tutor collaboration.
Mao Yi, Wang I Ta Copyright (c) 2025 TIRAI PANGGUNG https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66114 Sat, 22 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0800 Integrating Comprehensive Musicianship into Group Piano Teaching: Exploring the Motivation of Young Beginners Through Self-Determination Theory https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66115
Group piano instruction is increasingly implemented in early music education, yet its integration with comprehensive musicianship and the influence on young beginners’ motivation have received limited attention. This study addresses this gap by investigating how integrating comprehensive musicianship in group teaching impacts learning motivation, using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) that was proposed by Deci and Ryan as a framework. SDT highlights three psychological needs, autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as the foundation of intrinsic motivation. A qualitative case study was conducted with four group piano teachers in Northern China who taught children aged 4–8, drawing on interviews and classroom observations. Findings showed that discovery learning and structured teaching enhanced autonomy; optimal challenges, feedback, and musical mastery supported competence. The group setting also promoted meaningful peer, teacher, and parent relationships, fulfilling relatedness needs. Together, these factors significantly boosted young students’ motivation in group piano lessons. The study provides both theoretical and practical insights, showing that combining structured teaching with creative methods can create a rich and motivating learning environment for young beginners.
Ning Ke, Poon Chiew Hwa , Cheong Ku Wing Copyright (c) 2025 TIRAI PANGGUNG https://ejournal.um.edu.my/index.php/tiraipanggung/article/view/66115 Sat, 22 Nov 2025 00:00:00 +0800
