The Characteristics of al-Jurjani’s Method in Demonstrating the Rhetorical Inimitability of the Noble Qur’an through the Theory of Nazm
Abstract
This study, entitled “The Characteristics of al-Jurjani’s Method in Demonstrating the Rhetorical Inimitability of the Noble Qur’an through the Book Dala’il al-I‘jaz,” examines the methodology employed by al-Jurjani in establishing the concept of nazm and presenting it with clear features through a rigorous scientific approach. He gradually developed his theory by first presenting its general principles, then grounding and consolidating them, and finally addressing its particular issues. In doing so, he relied on evidence and examples drawn from the Qur’an itself, as well as from the speech and poetry of the Arabs. Al-Jurjani devoted all his critical insight, linguistic intuition, and profound knowledge of grammar and its meanings to serve his central thesis—namely, that the inimitability of the Qur’an lies solely in its nazm. In conducting this research, the researcher adopted both the inductive method, through the examination of textual evidence and general principles, and the analytical method, through their study, analysis, and the derivation of their characteristics and distinctive features.
