Gold dinar and silver dirham were the earliest currencies used after the advent of Islam in Mecca. Both are ribawi items and are subject to the rulings of riba based on the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Besides the dinar and dirham, the use of currency in Muslim societies has developed and changed over time. People have used other types of currency such as bronze, copper, paper money, and the digital currency used today. This study employs a thematic content analysis method to examine the characteristics and criteria of currency from an Islamic perspective. The views of Muslim scholars on currency are analysed in depth to obtain the study’s findings. Islamic currency is not limited to gold and silver alone. Muslim scholars also agree that currency functions as a medium of exchange and a measure of value for goods and services.
