Abstract

Self-confidence is one of the crucial elements to consider in Physical Education (PE). Self-efficacy theory represents an important theoretical perspective to study and understand student learning and self-confidence in PE. Based on this theory, the Sports Confidence Inventory (CSI) is suitable for measuring students' self-confidence related to learning PE subjects. The purpose of this study is to adapt the Malay version of SCI as well as verify the validity and reliability of its use among primary school students in the context of PE. A total of 307 10-year-old students who learned the game of handball during PE participated in this study. The study procedure comprises: a) to realize the adaptation of the Malay version of SCI; b) to verify SCI instrument reliability with Rasch Model analysis; and c) to verify construct validity through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Reliability analysis based on the Rasch model found that the individual reliability value was 0.89 and the item reliability was 0.80. CFA analysis reported χ2/df = 1.703, CFI = 0.978, GFI = 0.921 and RMSEA = 0.061 with internal validity for each variable based on Cronbach Alpha's (α) values ranging from 0.78 to 0.91. As for the Construct Validity (CR) value, the value of 0.89 to 0.96 was obtained by meeting the condition ≥ 0.60 and the Average Variance Extracted (AVE) value was between 0.61 to 0.82. Overall, the results of the study revealed that SCI consists of three consistent constructs and proves psychometric quality. In addition, SCI instrument can represent the constructs of cognitive efficiency, physical skills as well as training and resilience that can be widely used for evaluation in the context of PE. Therefore, further research needs to be carried out to review the suitability of SCI with qualitative methods to strengthen its suitability as well as expanded involving diverse study samples so that its use can be generalized.
