Abstract

ABSTRACT

The Suluk ethnic group is one of the indigenous communities inhabiting the coastal areas of Sabah and possesses a long and complex history. The history of the Sulu Sultanate, which once ruled southern Philippines, has often included territorial claims over Sabah as part of its administrative domain. Consequently, public perceptions of the Suluk people in Sabah have been divided. Although they are frequently classified as immigrants from the Philippines, the Suluk community is, in fact, part of Sabah’s indigenous population and has made significant contributions to the state’s cultural and social development. They possess a rich and diverse culture, along with a valuable literary and artistic heritage that deserves to be explored and introduced to the wider community. This field study involved six key informants who serve as Suluk literary experts in Sabah, with the aim of identifying and highlighting the poetic forms unique to this ethnic group. This pioneering data collection was undertaken to document the traditional poetry of the Suluk people, as it reflects their ethnic identity while showcasing its uniqueness and aesthetic beauty. The data obtained from interviews and observations were analyzed using the Pengkaedahan Melayu (Malay Methodology) introduced by Hashim Awang. This approach, which emphasizes the natural, utilitarian, moral, and intuitive dimensions, reveals that Suluk poetry is not only beautiful and diverse but also embodies profound philosophical values consistent with the true essence of literature itself, dulce et utile, that which is both beautiful and beneficial.
