Abstract

Family structure and parenting style are two main aspects in the student’s daily life that play a crucial role in the academic achievement of Indian students in lower secondary school. This paper alludes to a research carried out by the authors to examine the influence of family structure and parenting style towards academic achievement of Indian students. A total of nine students and their families were closely observed and interviewed. Their teachers were interviewed and school documents were also analysed in order to get a holistic picture and understanding of the impact of family structure on academic achievement. Extended family structure makes it possible for adult family members to facilitate in monitoring children’s activities and their whereabouts, and completing their homework hence assisting children in their learning process. Parents play an important role in providing suitable support for their children. Parents who practise authoritative parenting style, directly or indirectly have an influence on the academic achievement of the students.
