Abstract

This study is aimed at explaining the elements that facilitate post-conventional moral thinking of Moral Education student teachers. Moral thinking is one of the important aspects that Moral Education teachers should have to become effective teachers. Incapability of Moral Education teachers in moral reasoning causes ineffective process of teaching and learning. This study was conducted to answer the research question: (1) What are the elements that facilitate postconventional moral thinking of Moral Education student teachers? A qualitative research design using a case study approach was chosen for the study. Participants were selected based on the screening test called the 'Moral Thinking Scale'. A semi-structured interview technique was used to collect data from seven participants consisting of final year Moral Education student teachers. Data were analyzed and the emerging themes addressed the research question being investigated. This study found that four elements facilitate post-conventional moral thinking of Moral Education student teachers. These elements were family, religion, peers and attitude. Therefore, Moral Education teacher preparation programmes should consider the importance of incorporating these elements in the current programs to facilitate post-conventional moral reasoning of Moral Education student teachers and eventually produce quality teachers.
