Abstract

This study explores the effects of categorical brainstorming approach in teaching textile design to enhance the creative thinking of 1styear Bachelor of Textile Design students at the Faculty of Art and Design, Universiti Teknologi MARA in Shah Alam campus. This study focuses on cognitive skills and creativity to generate ideas for textile design. There are several practical methods in relation to the development of creative thinking. One is a brainstorming technique that has been effectively proven in various fields including education. Categorized brainstorming was a value added guideline from traditional brainstorming concept. The studyalso used a quasiexperimental design (2 x 2 pre-test and post-test experimental and control group) consisting of an experimental group and a control group. Simple random sampling was used to select 67 1st year Textile Design students in Shah Alam campus. Creativity test based on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) consisted of specific categories namelyFluency,Flexibility and Originality was used as an instrument in the study. The results showed there was a significant positive effect on the performance of the experimental group than the control group which was taught using traditional methods.
