Abstract

Whilst there has been a general increase in the life expectancy of the population of the country, there are some less fortunate elders who have to spend the remnants of their lives in the care of a state. A survey was conducted in one care institution for the elderly in Cheng, Malacca. The objectives of the study were to identify problems/aced by the residents, to identify the institution's actions in resolving the problems, and to identify the occupants' relationships with their family members. 40 residents of the centre were selected using simple random sampling as respondents of the study. The study found that ill-health and loneliness were major problems amongst the residents. Various measures were employed by the institution to meet the problems addressed by the residents. The study confirmed that collective cooperation of various sectors in society is substantial to improve the well-being of the elderly.
