Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of principal in instructional leadership m the development of teacher professionalism. Based on the perception of teachers, the study focused on instructional leadership of the principal and four dimension of professional staff development. The instructional leadership dimension encompasses six composite variables and from staff development covers four composite variables. The questionnaire has 36 items and was administered to 50 teachers at a secondary school in Selangor. The data was analyzed to determine the frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. The Spearman rho test was used to determine the correction between the dimension of instructional leadership and teacher professional development. The findings indicated that the principal played an active role in the process of instructional leadership to build a conducive climate and played a moderately strong role in teacher professional development. The result also showed that there is a strong correlation between the dimension of instructional leadership and teacher professional development (r = .736, p < .0I). Thus, this study suggested that instructional leadership of principal is vital in development of teacher professionalism in school.
