Copyright Notice

By submitting manuscripts to the Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS), authors agree to transfer copyright to the journal. However, authors may republish their work or grant others permission to republish it; in which case it should be accompanied by a proper acknowledgment that the work was originally published in the Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS). The journal adopt CC-BY-NC licence which authors may also share and distribute their article anywhere of non-commercial website, social media and repositories immediately on publication.

Authors may also reuse the Abstract and Citation information (e.g. Title, Author name, Publication dates) of their article anywhere at any time including social media such as Facebook, blogs and Twitter, providing that where possible a link is included back to the article on the journal site.

RIS Journal operates a double blind review process. All manuscripts submitted to RIS Journal will be initially assessed by the editor for suitability for the journal. Papers deemed suitable are then sent to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers in the field. The reviewers' recommendations are taken into consideration by the Editors in arriving at publication and revision decisions. Comments from the external reviewers are sent to the authors and they are notified of the journal's decision (accept, accept with major/minor revisions, reject). This entire review process will take anywhere between 2 and 6 months after submission of the manuscript. The review process is treated confidentially at all times. The Editors' decision is final.

Policies on Data Sharing and Reproducibility

The Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS) encourages transparency, research integrity, and the reproducibility of scholarly work. Authors are required to include a Data Availability Statement in their manuscripts, specifying whether research data are openly accessible, available upon request, deposited in a repository, or restricted for ethical, legal, or religious reasons. RIS supports the sharing of anonymised datasets, codebooks, interview protocols, and methodological documentation where appropriate, particularly for quantitative research. For qualitative Islamic studies research involving sensitive communities, religious institutions, or personal religious practices, full data sharing may not be feasible; in such cases, authors must justify restrictions and provide sufficient methodological descriptions to ensure reproducibility. Editors may request supporting data during peer review, and authors must retain research data for a minimum of five years after publication.

Policy on Ethical Oversight

RIS upholds strict ethical standards in research involving human participants, religious institutions, or sensitive cultural materials. Authors must confirm that their work has received clearance from an appropriate Ethics Review Board, and must demonstrate adherence to ethical practices such as informed consent, confidentiality, and responsible handling of sensitive information. For studies involving Islamic teachings, religious personalities, or community institutions, additional care must be taken to avoid misrepresentation, defamation, or harm to participants. RIS retains the right to request documentation of ethical approval or consent procedures at any stage of submission or review. Any ethical concerns raised during peer review or after publication will be investigated by the editorial team following COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.

Policy on Intellectual Property

Upon submission, authors agree to transfer copyright to RIS; however, the journal adopts a CC-BY-NC licence, which allows authors and third parties to share, distribute, and reproduce the article for non‑commercial purposes with proper attribution. Authors retain the right to reuse their content, including republishing sections of their work, posting preprints or accepted manuscripts to repositories, and sharing the abstract and citation details freely, provided acknowledgment is given that the work first appeared in RIS. All manuscripts must be original, free from copyright infringement, and must not be simultaneously under consideration elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use copyrighted materials such as images, tables, or translations of classical Islamic texts.

Options for Post‑Publication Discussions and Corrections

RIS supports responsible academic dialogue and post-publication transparency. Readers may submit comments, letters, or scholarly responses to published articles, which will be reviewed by the editorial board and may be published upon approval. If substantial errors, omissions, or ethical concerns arise after publication, RIS may issue corrigenda, errata, or editorial notices. In serious cases involving academic misconduct or invalid findings, the journal may retract the article following international best practices. Authors are required to cooperate fully in post-publication investigations and correction procedures. The journal also provides a mechanism for authors to request updates or clarifications to their published work, provided such amendments do not alter the core scholarly findings.

Revenue Sources, Advertising & Direct Marketing

RIS operates as a fully non‑commercial academic journal that does not charge author fees, collect subscriptions, accept advertisements, or engage in sponsorship‑based revenue, ensuring that editorial decisions remain entirely independent of financial influence. The journal also prohibits all forms of advertising, whether commercial, institutional, or targeted, thereby maintaining a clear separation between published content and external interests. Additionally, RIS does not conduct unsolicited or commercially motivated direct marketing; all journal communications, including calls for papers and announcements, are academically appropriate, transparent, and ethically targeted, supporting genuine scholarly engagement without exerting pressure on potential authors.
