Abstract

Gong Wanhui (1976- ) is undoubtedly one of the brightest writers among the Mahua literary community. He, just like the other Mahua writers, is not a stupendously swift writer. Gong has begun to write since he was studying at university but the first collection of stories The Room Next Door (《隔壁的房间》,2006) was only published after an accumulation of creations for nearly a decade. The collection is indicated as having the similar style as Taiwanese writer Luo Yijun (1967- ) by writer Zhong Wenyin, who wrote the preface. Oviparous Era (《卵生年代》, 2012), the second collection of stories of Gong Wanhui was published after 6 years. The scholar and writer, Huang Jinshu pointed out in the preface that some of Gong’s stories have been detached from the style of Luo Yijun. Therefore, this article will first discuss the similarity of the writing style between Gong Wanhui and Luo Yijun. After that, the core of thoughts of these two writers will be compared and analysed, and from the point of view of Gong Wanhui’s writing core “aesthetics of the abandoned”, we can find out the variation of “aesthetics of the abandoned” from The Room Next Door to the Oviparous Era. The conclusion is, even though local characteristics have been included by Gong in the secondcollection, “aesthetics of the abandoned” is still a time and space maze. This makes his stories appear to be in memories or dreams at the end, and become a journey without destination. The “aesthetics of the abandoned” in Oviparous Era is presented much vigorous if compared to The Room Next Door, but it seems to have the similar writing style as Luo Yijun, i.e. the greatest harm and abandonment from the loneliness in Surname Luna (《月球姓氏》, 2000) to the death in Over Sorrow (《遣悲怀》, 2001).
