Abstract

Hsu Yun-Tsiao was a famous Singaporean scholar in Southeast Asia and East-West Relations Studies, for which his expertise in the critical assessments of textual sources was widely recognized. On East-West Relations, he was meticulous in his attempts to compare and analyse Chinese and Western sources including attention to linguistics and field investigations. On Southeast Asia Studies, besides his familiarity with Chinese sources, he was well-versed in the academic traditions and relevant sources among Western scholars. The literature in both fields of studies built up earlier scholars from China, Japan and the West was to become the subject of his lifelong pursuit. Consequently, arising from his active involvement in historical research, one can detect an intimate relation between Hsu's works and the new trends in historical studies in China.
