Abstract

Local elites during the Song dynasty began to participate in official schools (guanxue 官学) construction activities, both in terms of direct monetary contribution and non-monetary participation, in order to exert their influence (in local government). The growth in size of these elite groups and the group's collective consciousness in "putting the nation's responsibilities on one's own shoulder" as well, have made their participation in these construction activities possible. Certain "vacancies" in regional local government's official schools' construction activities, have also set precedents of involving these elites. Besides, social custom in different regions also contributed towards the variation in actual practice. Through participation in different degree in official schools construction activities, the elites of the Southern Song dynasty gained a certain degre of social reputations, which further enhances such trends of development.
