Abstract

Phan Bội Châu (潘佩珠 1867-1940) was a Vietnamese patriot in modern times. He devoted his whole life to arouse patriotic spirit of the Vietnamese peoples, and had contributed much to the independence of Vietnam. During his first visit to Japan in 1905, he made acquaintance with Liang Qi Chao (1873-1929), Sun Yat Sen (1866-1925), Zhang Tai Yan (1869-1936) and other Chinese intellectuals. He was also in touch with Japanese Meiji Officials Ookuma Shigenobu (大为中心 1838-1922) and Inukai Tsuyoshi (犬养毅 1855-1932). Since then, he traveled regularly between China and Japan, and made secret contacts with anti-French activists in Vietnam to facilitate his revolutionary tasks. Meanwhile he organized "Eastern Journey Movement" and sent young students to further their study in Japan, so as to gain foreign assistance and look for ways to save his nation. During this period, Phan Bội Châu was eager to acquire new knowledge. He read extensively on books written by Chinese and Japanese thinkers and political activists, or listening to their advice, thus widening his understanding of world affairs and East Asian scenarios. He transformed the knowledge acquired into his writings. His works helped those Vietnamese and East Asian activists to understand trend of global changers, and as useful sources of knowledge which further stimulated their thinking. Hence, his writings not only manifest his intimate relationship with Japan and China, but more importantly, portray the intricate facade of cultural exchanges in East Asian region. Research on Phan Bội Châu's works and his relationship with Japan and China, would definitely enhance our understanding of his works, the many facets of intersecting and inter-action among various cultural thinking, as well as historical transformations, political scenarios of the East Asia history in modern times.
