Abstract

Fables are a literary genre that contains moral education, satirical connotations, and warning contents. The textbook Buddhism for Chinese Primary Schools compiled by Master Jin Ming contains many fables. These fables often contain Buddhist concepts of cause and effect, Buddhist teachings, and convey the profound meaning of Buddhism. The fables in the textbook are adapted from stories recorded in Buddhist scriptures or stories spread among Chinese and Indian folk. The purpose of compiling Buddhist textbooks using fables is like the education of the Buddha, using fables to educate the people about Buddhism. This can be said to be the cultural tradition of Buddhist education. Fables are not only rich in literary colour and value, but also play an educational role. This is also the value of fables. This article explores the literary characteristics of the fables in the textbook Buddhism for Chinese Primary Schools so as to understand the cultural tradition and effectiveness of Buddhist education in the fables used in the textbook.
