Traitors and Patriots: Indonesia's intervention in the Malaysia General Election of 1964
LIAW Joe Siau Chi (New Era University College, Malaysia)

Abstract
This article examines the Malaysia general elections of 1964 as a case study to illustrate how the Indonesian factor influenced the political performance of the left-wing political parties. The election was held during the period of Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation (Konfrontasi) where the factor of Indonesia confrontation was fully fermented, and the two countries fell into "warring" doubts. The Alliance of Malaysia played a "patriotic card" and called on voters to unite to resist Indonesia's invasion and fuel the emotions of voters. Meanwhile, the left-wing parties were cast into doubt that their leaders were involved in "treason" and "collaboration with Indonesia". As a result, the left-wing parties suffered a setback in the general elections, which subsequently altered the direction of their political advancement and caused a gradual decline in the leftist politics.
