ABSTRACT
Bina Satria Vocational High School focuses on developing students’ potential to become skilled and competitive individuals on a global scale through mastery of knowledge, technology, and adaptability in the professional world. One essential ability for students is interpersonal communication skills. Observations indicated that some twelfth-grade students at Bina Satria Vocational High School were less active in discussions, felt awkward when interacting with new people, and had difficulty maintaining eye contact during conversations. In addition, several students appeared hesitant to express their opinions due to fear of making mistakes, suggesting low self-confidence in communication. The purpose of this study is to examine the extent to which self-confidence is related to interpersonal communication skills among Grade XII students at SMK Bina Satria. Using a simple random sampling technique, 172 students were selected as respondents. Data was collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using the Product Moment correlation technique. The results indicate a very strong positive correlation (r = 0.996; p = 0.000), demonstrating that self-confidence plays a significant role in shaping students’ effectiveness in interpersonal communication. From the perspective of Malay Studies, interpersonal communication is closely related to cultural values such as politeness (kesantunan), mutual respect (hormat-menghormati), and the ability to express ideas in a harmonious and ethical manner. These values emphasize that effective communication is not only influenced by psychological factors such as self-confidence but is also shaped by cultural norms that encourage balanced, respectful, and socially responsible interactions. Therefore, strengthening students’ self-confidence while internalizing Malay cultural values can contribute to the development of more effective and culturally grounded interpersonal communication among students.
