Abstract

Ethical leadership is mainly focus on the principle and personality. Ethical leadership is closely linked to the behavior and commitment shown in an organization, without commitment and behavior, it would be impossible to execute ethical leadership to the followers. However, there is limitation in principal ethical leadership practices due to the challenges and strategies found at secondary school. It shows positive ethical behavior further enhancement by the principal in his leadership. Then the ethical leadership is needed as a model to show of good values to be applied through example, behavior and ideology. The main purpose of this research is to identity the practices, challenges and strategies of principals’ ethical leadership in selected secondary schools in Selangor. The ethical leadership is explored through the approach on study practice, challenges and strategy applied to form the student’s morals. It was not an easy task to measure the right ethics but it should be illustrated through the principal experience. Therefore, the research was design through the explorative case study. The participant in this research was made up by a principal and 5 teachers for each school. Total number of research consists of 12 participants from 2 schools. Interview data is recorded, transcribed and analyzed by encoding with theme generation. The finding shows that principals’ ethical leadership practices can be explained through cognitive and affective approaches. The communication is focus on cognitive and more with the guidance and advice of both schools. While affective focused communication, there is a difference with emotional actions. The challenges faced in the principal ethical leadership were an environmental challenges that moulds the student’s moral to effectively overcome the problems, the teachers should have emotional ability and the seriousness of the teacher. In the strategy applied and data analyze there were 4 theme strategies applied which is self-oriented, teacher, students and organization. For self-student directed approach, the data shows on personality enhancement programed. Therefore, principals’ ethical leadership strategies are also viewed in terms of their behavior (psychomotor) in the process of developing student moral. In conclusion the challenges and strategies used by the principal is indirectly interrelated to the content of morals of students. It can be observed and applied too in organization to enhance the principal ethical leadership.
