History

History of the Malaysian Journal of Tropical Geography (MJTG)

The origins of the Malaysian Journal of Tropical Geography (MJTG) are deeply intertwined with the development of geographical scholarship in Southeast Asia. Its lineage traces back to the Journal of Tropical Geography, which was established in 1953 as a joint venture between the Geography Departments of the University of Malaya (then located in Singapore) and the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur.

In September 1980, the Department of Geography at Universiti Malaya officially launched the Malaysian Journal of Tropical Geography (MJTG) as a successor to the original joint publication, which has since provided a dedicated platform for the dissemination of original ideas, empirical studies, and theoretical innovations focused on the complexities of the tropical environment.

MJTG commemorated 40 years of continuous publication with Volume 46 in 2020. It was also this year when the journal transitioned to an Open Access model via the Universiti Malaya eJournal platform. This move assigned the journal its current e-ISSN (2948-5134) and ensured that its rich repository of knowledge—spanning over 50 volumes—is available to researchers worldwide.
