Abstract

In Standard based Curiculum for the National Preschool Malaysia (KSPK) it was recommended by the Ministry of Education that Multiple Intellegence theory (Gardner, 1983) be explored and where possible be applied in the teaching of the children in various subjects including the inculcation of Islamic values. In this study attempts were made to acertain teachers' knowledge on the Multiple Intelligence theory, and the effects of its application, particularly its musical and rhymthic component on the teaching of some simple verses of the Al Qur'an and simple prayers (doas) which form the beginning and the basis for the practicing of Islamic values. For this study a survey using a questionnaire was employed for which Islamic education teachers from twelve annexed preschools in the districts of Klang and Kuala Selangor were selected as the respondents. The findings showed that teachers' knowledge of the Multiple Intelligence theory was high while the levels of children's performance in terms of the ability to memorise and recite the verses and the prayers was also very high. It can be concluded that in the KSPK the application of the Multiple Intelligence theory can be effective, which thus showed that the Ministry of Education had moved on the right direction in helping the children to improve their learning. Permission for the the study to be carried was granted by Ministry of Education (EPRD) and both Klang and Kuala Selangor District Departments of Education.
