Abstract
Loving emotion which ignites sensual feelings, are a basic structure and important essence in the writing of classical Malay literature, especially in the genre of hikayat. Elements of loving emotion that are depicted by various extraordinary or magical occurrences provide a sense of relief to the soul (catharsis) of the audience who find enjoyment in this genre. This research questioned if the element of loving emotion is the main emotion that supports all other emotional elements that can be seen in most of the occurrences in Hikayat Gul Bakawali. The objective of this study is to analyse if the relation and intertwining of loving emotions with magical occurrences that are contained in Hikayat Gul Bakawali are able to leave a sense of relief (catharsis) to the audience. The methodology used in this study is the qualitative method under descriptive analysis. These elements of loving emotion are analysed using the method of language styles, specifically the language of love towards parents, secondly the language of love towards a wife and thirdly, the language of love towards nature, which will ultimately leave a sense of relief to the audience. The results of this analysis found that loving emotions towards a wife dominates the entire loving element contained in the text of Hikayat Gul Bakawali. In closing, the element of loving emotion towards a wife is the main vessel that is the basis of most occurrences, which in turn forms the background of the text in Hikayat Gul Bakawali. This is because Malay culture promotes love and affection towards wives. The reason behind this is because a wife is an important individual in a happy family life, besides one’s parents. In conclusion, Islam itself encourages that we do good to others, as expressed in this sentence, ‘habluminnanas wa habluminallah’, which reminds us to know and love humans first before we love Allah. Learn to love among yourselves first then learn to love Me, your God.
