Abstract
This research re-explores the studies and research papers made on Arabic phonetics in depth and contemporary manner, especially where Qur’an is concerned. This helps to build up on what earlier grammarians and Qur’an interpreters have come up with as an attempt to establish a new methodology for interpreting the Qur’an. The new methodology would correspond to Islamic narrations and satisfies the mind based on phonetic theories pointed out by early linguists such as Ibn Jinni as well as contemporary European scientific studies. Thus, this study attempts to apply the phonetic theory in interpreting the Qur’an. It examines the following aspects: First: The meaning of phonemes in the Qur’an (it includes the meaning of consonants and vowels). Second: The meaning of syllables in the Qur’an (it includes six syllables). Third: The meaning of intonation, phonology and rhyme (i.e., fasila) in the Qur’an (it includes intonation as seen by early and late scholars and Qur’an reciters, phonology and rhyme). Finally, the conclusion draws some significant results of the research.
