Aim and Scope

WILAYAH: International Journal of East Asian Studies (formerly known as IJEAS : International Journal of East Asian Studies) aims to provide a platform for exchanges of ideas related to the East Asian region with particular emphasis on Japan, China and Korea. It offers informative and insightful multidisciplinary discourse for academics, policymakers and students alike. The result is a provocative exploration of the most pressing East Asian political, economic and social challenges of our time. WILAYAH is a blind peer-reviewed publication by the Department of East Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya, Malaysia.

New Website and Updates


Thank you so much for being so supportive over the years in making the WILAYAH : International Journal of East Asian Studies (WILAYAH/WIJEAS) an interdisciplinary space for East Asian focused research. We are celebrating 10 years of its inception this year. The original idea of establishing the WILAYAH is reflected in the long tradition and development of the Department of East Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya (UM). The department is one of its kind in Malaysia that offers a multidisciplinary programme relating to Japan, Korea and China, and research related to the East Asian region.

Vol. 9, No. 1, (2020) published

Vol. 10 No. 1 (2021): Special Issue on Covid-19 and Japan

This Special Issue of the WILAYAH: International Journal of East Asian Studies contains nine articles on the theme of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Japan. The goal of the Special Issue is to create awareness of research studies in the area of pandemic outbreaks in Japan and other East Asian countries. The production of this Special Issue is proudly sponsored by Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL), Malaysia.
