Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Journal of Shariah Law and Research (JSLR)

1. Policy Statement

The Journal of Shariah Law and Research (JSLR) upholds the highest standards of research integrity and ethical publishing. In response to the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in scholarly activities, this policy outlines the acceptable use of AI technologies by authors, reviewers, and editors.

2. Acceptable Use of AI

Authors may use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, DeepL) to assist with:

  • Grammar and spelling correction
  • Improving clarity and style
  • Language translation
  • Basic data analysis or visualization support

However, all AI usage must be fully transparent and acknowledged within the manuscript.

3. Disclosure Requirements

If AI tools are used in any part of the research or writing process, authors must declare this in the Acknowledgements or Methods section. The disclosure should include:

  • The name of the AI tool
  • The nature of its use
  • Confirmation that the authors reviewed and approved all AI-assisted content

Example:

“An AI tool (ChatGPT, OpenAI) was used to refine language and structure. All content was verified by the authors.”

4. Prohibited Practices

The following are strictly prohibited:

  • Listing AI as an author
  • Using AI to generate or fabricate data, citations, or references
  • Submitting unreviewed AI-generated text
  • Misusing AI to influence the peer review process

5. Responsibility and Authorship

Authors retain full responsibility for the content of their submissions, including any portion drafted or assisted by AI tools. AI cannot meet authorship criteria and must not be credited as a co-author.

6. Editorial and Reviewer Use

Editors and reviewers may use AI tools solely for language checking or summarization but must not rely on them for final evaluation. All judgments must be made by qualified human experts.

7. Ethical Compliance

This policy is consistent with international ethical guidelines including:

  • COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics)
  • Elsevier’s AI and Ethics Recommendations

8. Review and Updates

This policy will be periodically reviewed in response to technological developments and evolving best practices in academic publishing.
