Abstract

Biotechnology is an area in science which involves the use of technology to manipulate organisms to improve products in agriculture, environmental conservation and healthcare. This field is useful to ensure the well-being, survival and preservation of life. In the context of education, the biotechnology component is part of the science curriculum; especially in Biology but it is still less effectively implemented. The purpose of this study is to gather insights into the problems that hamper the efforts of successful implementation of biotechnology education in schools. This study involves three experienced teachers from three schools in the Klang Valley. They were interviewed using a semistructured interview protocol. Several factors related to this phenomenon have been identified. Among the factors were the lack of knowledge in Biotechnology among teachers, the lack of appropriate pedagogy, and the insufficient teaching aids for delivering concepts in Biotechnology.
