Abstract

Hilal visibility determination is important in establishing the beginning of Hijri months because of its connection with the performance of religious obligations in Islam. Developments in science and technology (S&T) have broadened approaches to hilal determination through the use of hisab, astronomical parameters, visibility criteria, and modern observational technologies. However, the extent to which the use of S&T in Shariah studies genuinely constitutes knowledge integration has not been systematically examined. This exploratory study examines patterns of integration between Shariah and S&T in selected Shariah studies identified through purposive sampling. The articles were analysed using qualitative content analysis based on three dimensions: sources of knowledge, mechanisms of interaction, and outcomes of integration, supported by ordinal scoring and descriptive statistics. The findings show a median S-M-H profile of 2-1-1. Most studies use S&T for support, comparison, or justification without substantive epistemological or methodological interweaving. The study concludes that the classification of integration should be based on how S&T knowledge is operationalised in the analysis and research outcomes to ensure that the concept of knowledge integration in Shariah studies is applied accurately and consistently.
