Islamic education is the best and most dynamic medium for the formation of a complete (kāmil) and comprehensive (shāmil) individual in an integrated and balanced manner, grounded in the principles of creed (ʿaqīdah), law (sharīʿah), and ethics (akhlāq), derived from the Qur’an, Sunnah, and consensus (ijmāʿ). A well-planned process that incorporates the elements of taʿlīm (instruction), tarbiyah (nurturing), and taʾdīb (disciplining) is capable of developing the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical potentials of a person, thereby cultivating a sense of servitude to God as the foundation for fulfilling the responsibility of vicegerency (khilāfah) in order to attain well-being in this world and the Hereafter. This paper seeks to address several main objectives, among them: (i) to evaluate the primacy of knowledge and education from the perspective of the Qur’an and Sunnah, and (ii) to trace the process of intellectual revival among Muslim communities in the Malay Archipelago, particularly in Johor and Pahang in the 19th century CE. The research methodology employed is library research, while the methods of analysis used are inductive and deductive approaches. The study finds that there was a close relationship in terms of collaborative networks in the process of intellectual development between the two states, contributing to the elevation of Islam to the highest status in the lived practices of society.
