Abstract

The learning of Arabic in Malaysia functions not only as a language of knowledge but also as a language of communication. Therefore, the study of Arabic must be given due attention. One of the key aspects that should be emphasized in learning Arabic is grammar, as mastery of Arabic grammar is one of the factors influencing proficiency in Arabic language skills. The purpose of this study is to identify the level of mastery of Arabic grammar among Foundation students in Malaysian public universities and to examine the factors influencing such mastery. In addition, the study aims to propose effective teaching and learning methods for Arabic grammar. This research adopts a quantitative approach. Questionnaires and Arabic grammar proficiency tests were used to measure the level of mastery. The respondents consisted of SPM graduates who successfully enrolled in Foundation programmes at Malaysian public universities. Descriptive analysis was employed to determine students’ level of mastery. The findings indicate that the mastery of Arabic grammar among Foundation students in Malaysian public universities is at a moderate level.
