Imam al-Bukhari’s Thought on Debt: An Analysis of the Hadiths in Kitab al-Istiqrad wa Ada’ al-Duyun wa al-Hajr wa al-Taflis in Sahih al-Bukhari

Abstract

Imam al-Bukhari is a prominent figure in the field of hadith. This article explores his intellectual contributions in hadith studies by focusing specifically on the theme of debt. Through an examination of fiqh al-hadith in Kitab al-Istiqrad wa Ada’ al-Duyun wa al-Hajr wa al-Taflis, which is one of the sections dealing with financial transactions (muamalah) in Sahih al-Bukhari, the sharpness and depth of his thought on this subject become evident. This study employs library research and document analysis methods to obtain relevant data. Inductive and deductive approaches are applied in analyzing the data. The findings indicate, among other things, that Imam al-Bukhari systematically explains the concept of debt through the structuring of subthemes, each of which demonstrates coherence and alignment, such as debt repayment, bankruptcy, and asset restriction. These matters are presented in a clear and organized manner through the chapter headings (Tarjamah Bab). In conclusion, Imam al-Bukhari’s approach to fiqh al-hadith is systematic, accessible, and reflective of his excellence as a mujtahid scholar of his time.
