Abstract

Advancements in information and communication technology (ICT) have significantly influenced changes in human lifestyles. The combination of sophisticated digital devices and broadband access has facilitated daily human interaction, whether in audio or visual form. As a result, information can be disseminated rapidly and efficiently. Recently, the phenomenon of spreading and sharing information has become a trend among users of new social media platforms. This includes various categories of information such as crime news, tragedies, accidents, and even content containing exaggeration and fabrication. This situation has also affected the halal industry. Amid the rapid growth of the local and global halal ecosystem, negative elements have emerged that threaten its stability. A number of social media users have been spreading false information regarding halal matters, particularly involving prohibited (haram) and impure (najis) elements such as pork and its derivatives, alcohol, and similar substances. Such actions not only constitute attacks against particular products but also have broader implications for consumers, industry players, and halal authorities. Accordingly, this study discusses the spread of false information related to halal products in the market, the mediums through which it spreads, and its impact on the halal industry. The study also explains the Islamic perspective on the dissemination of such information, based on evidence from the Qur’an and al-Sunnah. To achieve these objectives, the researcher employed a library-based approach by reviewing relevant literature from websites, newspapers, and printed materials such as books and journal articles. The qualitative data were analyzed inductively to formulate the findings. The study finds that false halal-related issues are often disseminated without proper verification, resulting in negative consequences for various parties. Therefore, the study proposes information-filtering criteria grounded in Islamic principles to effectively address inaccurate issues within the Muslim community in Malaysia in particular and the wider region in general, while ensuring that the halal industry continues to grow sustainably and robustly.
