Abstract

Kitab Tarjuman is a work authored by Kiai Haji (KH) Abdul Hamid bin Kiai Ithbat (d. 1352 AH/1933 CE). For a long time, this book has served as one of the key references for students of pondok and pesantren as well as the wider community in the fields of theology, fiqh, tajwid, ethics, and other foundational disciplines that shape the spiritual life of Muslim society, particularly in Madura. It is written in Jawi script with vowel markings and uses the Madurese language. In addition to identifying the rulings on staying up late (bergadang) and qaza’ as discussed in Kitab Tarjuman, this study also presents the biography of KH Abdul Hamid and a general overview of the book. The study is qualitative in nature. Data were collected through library research and field research in the form of interviews. The study finds that KH Abdul Hamid was a scholar who provided practical solutions to community issues. It further explains that the original ruling on staying up late is makruh (disliked), and it may even become haram (prohibited) if it involves unlawful activities. Similarly, the original ruling on qaza’ is makruh if it does not involve imitation of immoral or non-Muslim individuals.
