Aims and Scope

The Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture (JCLC / 馬大華人文學與文化學刊), published by the Department of Chinese Studies at the University of Malaya, is a scholarly journal dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of Chinese humanities and social sciences. While the journal welcomes broad research on Chinese literature, culture, and society, it places a distinct and prominent focus on the history, culture, language, and social dynamics of the Chinese diaspora in Malaysia and the broader Southeast Asian region.

Scope

The journal invites original research that explores various facets of Chinese studies. Based on the scholarly works it publishes, its specific areas of scope include, but are not limited to:

  • Literature, Arts, and Media: Analysis of classical and modern Chinese literature, Post-Malaysian Chinese-language cinema and Sinophone film theory, alternative or new media on Chinese societies.
  • Diasporic and Community History: The historical development, settlement, and genealogy of regional Chinese dialect groups in Southeast Asia.
  • Religion and Folk Beliefs: The organization, diversity, and evolution of Chinese religions in the region.
  • Language and Linguistics: Comparative linguistic and phonological studies of Chinese dialects, the intersection of language with national identity and related studies.
  • Education and Nation-Building: The historical development, resilience, and identity contestation of Chinese education and schools within plural societies, especially in the context of ethnic and language policies.
  • Business, Economics, and Culture: The evolution and management models of Chinese family businesses, the economic activities of specific migrant groups, the relationship between historical "Chinese old brand" enterprises and the government, and the tourism value of cultural heritage and place names.

Language Policy

Reflecting its diverse academic ecosystem and regional positioning, the journal accepts and publishes manuscripts in multiple languages, actively providing paper templates for submissions in Chinese, English, and Malay.
