This paper examines the development strategies and challenges faced by the Chinese e-commerce platform Alibaba in the Malaysian market. The research indicates that Malaysia, as the third-largest economy in Southeast Asia, presents significant opportunities for Chinese platforms due to its rapidly growing e-commerce market. Alibaba swiftly entered the market through various means, including the acquisition of Lazada and collaboration with the government to establish a Digital Free Trade Zone. The company implemented a comprehensive localisation strategy, encompassing aspects such as language, products, payment systems, and logistics. Through the differentiated positioning of its two platforms, Taobao and Lazada, coupled with a refined payment and logistics system, Alibaba has comprehensively addressed diverse market demands. However, Alibaba also confronts numerous challenges in the Malaysian market, including stringent data protection regulations, intense market competition, and cultural adaptation issues. To address these challenges, the company has adopted measures such as forming local teams, strengthening cooperation with local enterprises, and optimising cross-border shopping experiences. The paper concludes by proposing recommendations, including deepening localisation strategies, increasing technological investment, and enhancing platform security, to facilitate Alibaba's sustainable development in the Malaysian market.
