History

The Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies was established in 2014. Its inaugural issue, Volume 1 Issue 1, was published on 30 April 2014. The journal was initially scheduled for publication three times per year: Issue 1 (January–April), Issue 2 (May–August), and Issue 3 (September–December). In its first year of publication, a total of six research articles were accepted and published.

However, beginning in 2022, a restructuring initiative reduced the journal’s publication frequency to two issues per year: Issue 1 (January–June) and Issue 2 (July–December). This change was undertaken to strengthen editorial management and to enable continuous evaluation, with the aim of systematically enhancing the quality of published articles.

In 2025, the title Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies was registered with new ISSN and e-ISSN numbers following advice received from the National ISSN Centre of Malaysia. This was necessary as the previous ISSN (2289-6821) was designated for the CD-ROM (optical disc) format (see ISSN Portal: https://portal.issn.org/resource/ISSN/2289-6821).

Effective from 28 January 2025, the Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies (RIS) officially adopted new International Standard Serial Numbers. The current identifiers are ISSN 3083-9270 (print) and e-ISSN 3083-9262 (online). Both the ISSN and e-ISSN are registered under the new journal title "Online Journal of Research in Islamic Studies".
