Abstract

The study aimed to identify the factors that led to the marginalisation of Islamic education as a subject in secondary schools in the Aga district of Dakahlia Governorate, as well as its impact on students at that level. To achieve its objectives, the study employed a descriptive method by administering a questionnaire to a suitable sample from the research population, consisting of 444 teachers: 271 from general secondary schools and 173 from Al-Azhar secondary schools. The findings revealed that the average scores for the factors contributing to the marginalisation of Islamic education were high. The principal causes identified include the media-driven distortion of the image of religious scholars and the diminishing of their social standing, travel abroad and exposure to non-Muslim Western cultures, and finally, the limited awareness among many Muslim families regarding the true teachings of Islam.
