Abstract

The growth and development of mangrove forests in Malaysia has an interesting and unique history of its own. Very little however has been written on mangrove forests in this country. The mangrove forests represents a growth community that thrives in colonies along the edge of the coastal areas in the country. This article seeks to provide a discussion of the background to the development of mangrove forests and their geographical development in Malaysia. This examination of mangrove forests begins with a discussion of the meaning of the term 'mangrove forests', and it is followed by consideration of the characteristics and formation of mangrove forests, the classification of mangrove forests, and the system of adaption of mangrove forests, the zones, conditions  and distribution  of  mangrove  forests in Malaysia.
