Abstract

The transfer of the Sarawak administration from the Raja Brooke regime to British rule on 1July 1946 resulted in major changes in the social development of the state. Even though the over-arching purpose of the changes was to strengthen the administration and development of the colonial economy  in Sarawak, these changes benefited the people of Sarawak considerably. This article begins with an examination of the expanding population of the state, the progress in education, health and medical services, and infrastructural amenities such as water supply, electricity and communications to assess the changes brought about during this period. The article then examines the transport system, social and welfare organisations as well as cooperative development in Sarawak during the period of British administrative rule between 1946 and  1963.
