Abstract

The article examines the Sarawak state election of 2001. The main focus of this article is the performance of the opposition parties in that election. After the 1999 General Election the performance of the opposition parties, especially Parti Keadilan Nasional showed much improvement athough the 1999 election was the Keadilan's  maiden entry in the Sarawak state election. While Keadilan did not win any seats in the state election it managed to gain considerable support among the electoral in terms of votes. Therefore some Keadilan leaders were confident that the party would win several seats in Sarawak in the 2001states election. Apart from Keadilan, other opposition parties and groups such as OAP, PAS and STAR together with an Independent group led by Abang Abu Bakar also hoped to win several seats in this election. This article examines the outcome of the 2001 state election to assess the performance of the opposition parties and considers their prospects for the future.
