The Concept of Amthal in the Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH): A Preliminary Study

Abstract

This article aims to examine the concept of amthāl (parables) in the Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) from linguistic and literary perspectives. In addition, it seeks to highlight the significance of amthāl in Hadith as one of the distinctive methods (uslūb) of daʿwah. A brief history of the development of amthāl in Hadith will also be reviewed, particularly works dedicated specifically to this subject. Library research and comparative analysis methods are employed to collect and analyze the data. The findings indicate that the concept of amthāl in Hadith is clearly established and serves not only linguistic and literary purposes, but more importantly functions as an effective method of daʿwah that influences audiences and listeners. It may even become a means through which a person receives guidance (hidayah) from Allah SWT, in addition to serving as a reference in Arabic language and literature.
